The first issue of the New york trade journal newpaper The Journalist wrote a scathing article on him: https://www.loc.gov/resource/2023270549/1884-03-22/ed-1/?sp=1&st=pdf&r=-0.275%2C-0.055%2C1.549%2C1.549%2C0. Is the criticism here justified?

I just read the article, and I don't think it is justified and is entirely aligned with the post-Reconstruction narrative of Reconstruction. Following the end of Reconstruction in 1877, the Southerners and Northern sympathizers of the South, actively demonized and ridiculed anyone and everything associated with Reconstruction. Tourgée was a prominent figure of Reconstruction, so I'm sure there were many, many articles like this.
